THINGS TO DO IN SWALEDALE IN OCTOBER
2019 is really running away with us but with autumn arriving with a breath of (very) fresh air there are lots of things to do in and around Swaledale at this my favourite time of the year!
Running on several dates over October is the Dairy Days - A Taste in Time where there are demonstrations of how cheese and butter were made at home in a traditional Yorkshire Dales` farmhouse. Personally I would love to pop along and see this so will try and get into my diary next time I am in the area.
Based in the Dales Country Museum in Hawes this is a free event and is running at 1pm on the following dates: 01, 8,15 22 and 29th of October.
Waterfalls in Swaledale
I am going to create a dedicated post when I have some of my own images to use and can comment in more detail but there are many lovely waterfalls to see and as the inevitable rain arrives over the coming month this will lead to an increased water flow and ever more spectacular waterfalls.
Actually, here is a link for you so you can keep an eye on the local river levels, this one is for the river Swale and Arkle Beck junction in Reeth.
Some local waterfalls are:
Crackpot Falls about 10 minutes walk away - check out our guide to Crackpot Falls here.
Kidson Force is actually a couple of falls located here just up by Keld.
Wain Wath Force which is slightly further up stream from Kidson Force with easy access from the road.
Hardraw Force over Buttertubs Pass towards Hawes is the highest drop in England . Easily accessed but is on private land so a charge of £2.50 is made.
Hawes Falls are bang in the middle of Hawes and easy peasy to see, not massively spectacular but pretty and handy to do some shopping at the same time!
Buttertubs Falls, actually made this up but there is a bit of a falls in the ‘holes’ on Buttertubs Pass.
I think for me at this time of the year the best things is just walking with the dog, back home setting a fire, and then a quick walk up to the Punchbowl for a pint.
So enjoy a walk, we have some local Swaledale walks and of course lots of books in the house for you to use for local and walks further afield.
